Paul Kane: Wanderings of an ArtistWednesday, October 6, 1982 - September 1983

The exhibition traces the journey of the Canadian artist Paul Kane from the Great Lakes region to the Pacific coast and back during the years 1845-1848.

Kane undertook his journey to study and preserve in his paintings the life of the North American Indian. As he traveled he painted portraits of Indians, scenes of their everyday life, and he also painted landscapes of the territory where he journeyed.

In addition to the paintings he made, the artist also wrote about his experiences in a book which he entitled "Wanderings of an Artist." The exhibition follows the narrative of Kane's book with excerpts from the author's writings to identify the subject matter of the works of art.
