DescriptionFeatures artwork by Ila McAfee
Label TextArtists in Taos produced calendars as a way to bring their art to larger audiences. The calendars also produced extra income. McAfee’s Calendar of the Southwest features a scene of Christmas Eve at Taos Pueblo on the cover. Worshippers gather at the San Geronimo Church for evening services and a procession. McAfee portrayed the torches used in the procession and a small fire, evocative of the large bonfires lit for the event. In black and white, she conveyed the intensity of the fires by using white spaces with lines radiating outward.
ProvenanceNelda C. Stark [1909-1999]; gifted June 4, 1996 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art
