Label TextLook closely at the vase in front of you. Can you see the rooster and clouds etched into its surface? The vase was made using cloisonné, a technique popular in East Asian art. The artist used wire to outline the bronze vase with the design and filled it in with colored, liquid enamel. The vase was fired in a kiln, then sanded and polished to reveal the smooth, shiny design underneath. This Japanese vase dates to the Meiji era (1868-1912) in the early years of the Japanese Empire. East Asian art became very popular in America during the years that Miriam and William Stark lived in Orange.
