DescriptionPorcelain sculpture of male American Robin perched on rock, with daffodils.Label TextBoehm shows the male American robin with its characteristic warm orange breast. Yet, in popular descriptions of the American robin, it is often called red-breasted. “Red Robin” is the name of a restaurant chain, several games, superheroes, and it appears in song lyrics. The reason goes back to descriptions of the European robin, dating to the fourteenth century. There was no word in English for the color orange. It was red-yellow, and the robin’s coloring tended more toward the red, so it became known as red.
