Label TextFechin found Taos, New Mexico, to be an inspiring setting. He visited in 1926 and settled there the next year. With his landscape paintings, he often responded to the subtleties of the region. His daughter explained that Fechin approached a canvas as an exciting space. He believed the job of the artist was to fill the space harmoniously and with balance. In Winter Scene, he painted with a progression of colors. The white of the snow, the buff-colored bushes and adobes, the purple mountains, and purplish-gray, cloudy sky are like notes in a musical chord.
