Label TextIn 1906, Leigh made his first trip to the American West. He came from New York City where he worked as an illustrator. He had support from the Santa Fe Railway to paint a landscape of the Grand Canyon. Leigh wrote about his intentions in painting the West. “I knew that some of the most distinctive, characteristic, dramatic, poetic, unique motifs in the world were here in this virgin country waiting an adequate hand to do them justice." Leigh painted this view of the canyon with steep salmon-colored walls that frame and complement the blue colors of the distant landscape.
