Label TextBerninghaus portrays the Roman Catholic rite of Corpus Christi. The procession displays the Blessed Sacrament representing the body and blood of Christ. The scene portrays the cultural mix of New Mexico. Some worshippers are Hispanic descendants. Others wear clothing indicating Anglo background. They gather at the church in the village of Las Trampas, New Mexico. The painting conveys the importance of ritual and spirituality. It departs from accepted views of the West as warring country.
