Label TextMiller portrayed his patron William Drummond Stewart reclining and sharing a pipe in friendship with Indians at the 1837 rendezvous. The rendezvous was an annual gathering in the Rocky Mountain region of fur trappers who assembled to trade pelts for supplies brought out from St. Louis. Indians also came to trade and socialize. Miller painted this work, originally titled Camp of the Indians at the Rendezvous of the Whites near the Mountains of the Winds, upon their return from the trip and then shipped it to Scotland to hang in Stewart’s ancestral home, Murthly Castle.
