Label TextMiller visited the West as an artist, hired by Captain William Drummond Stewart. Stewart was a member of a noble Scottish family. He traveled to North America seeking adventure. In 1837, Stewart journeyed to the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains, present-day Wyoming. He accompanied a caravan taking supplies to trappers called mountain men. He selected Miller to paint scenes of his experiences. Thus, Miller’s paintings tend to be more romantic and less detailed than other artists of the period. He painted this work several years after the journey. He used sketches and his memories to create the image.
