Label TextSharp built a home on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. He wanted to live near the Indian subjects he painted. At the turn of the century, the United States government required Indians to live on reservations. The government restricted their observance of traditional ways of life. Scenes like this would have been rare. Sharp, however, was able to observe aspects of traditional customs, especially during the annual Crow Fair. The orange and yellow glow from the tipis attracts the eye of the viewer. It seems to symbolize the heart-felt connection to traditional ways for the Crow, or Apsáalooke, people.
