Label TextPaul Kane began his artistic career as a decorative furniture painter and then turned to portraiture as he gained proficiency. Like most North American artists of his time, Kane wanted to go to Europe to study Old Master paintings. Before he was able to travel abroad he spent approximately five years in the United Stares where he earned money for his voyage through portrait painting, especially in the Mobile, Alabama area. This painting of the steamboat "Norma" with her captain or owner is the only known surviving painting from Kane’s stay in the United States. The "Norma" was built at Louisville, Kentucky, 1839, then transferred to New Orleans. The portrait is probably of George Washington Haygood.
