Label TextThe First Snow, Mule Deer demonstrates Dunton’s love for wildlife of the West. He found sources for animals to paint in the forests near Taos, New Mexico. Late in his career, he adopted the medium of lithography. During the Great Depression, printmaking was a way to produce works of art that could be sold for lesser prices than paintings. In this print, he effectively used the medium by varying the intensity and placement of lines against the white of the paper. He was able to portray the deer, members of the Cervidae family, realistically against the more stylized snowscape.
