Label TextMoran is known for his paintings of the American West landscape as uninhabited wilderness. Yet, he was also adept at scenes of town life as in this painting. Moran traveled to the country of Mexico in 1883. He made sketches as he traveled through central Mexico. In this painting he depicted a market day, a scene of everyday life, yet it seems exotic. Vendors gather in the plaza with their wares, as customers stroll among them. The backdrop is a beautiful Spanish colonial church.
