Label TextKane stopped at Fort Edmonton during his travels. He joined the marriage celebration for two adult children of fur traders. The next day the artist left with the newlyweds on a two-hundred-mile trip to Fort Pitt by dogsled. They had three carioles, six sledges, and at least thirty-six dogs, “forming when on route a long and picturesque cavalcade.” A cariole carried one person only. It had a flat board, bent up in front, with a straight back for leaning on. The sides were buffalo hide, with hair scraped off and dried, resembling thick parchment. “A person slips into it as into a tin bath.”
