Label TextCaribou Track illustrated The White Forest, Remington’s account of a hunting trip in Quebec. The hunters are studying the hoofprints of the caribou. The hooves enable the caribou to move quickly over the snow without sinking. The heavy snow created problems for Remington and his two companions. To seek the caribou, they had to wear snowshoes, which required much energy to maneuver. The cold and wet weather challenged the stamina of the hunters, but Remington relished “the strenuous life.” The White Forest first appeared in Harper’s Monthly, 1898. Harper’s reprinted it in Men with the Bark On, a collection of Remington’s stories.
