Remington began his artistic career as an illustrator. He traveled to the West to make drawings of the soldiers, cowboys, and Native Americans. He also wrote accounts of his observations. His book, Men with the Bark On, compiled many of his stories. It also included reproductions of his paintings. The title evokes his admiration for the men who were adventurers.
