Label TextKane’s paintings of Norway House and Fort Edmonton depict dwellings that are forts. These forts were not military buildings. They were structures for commercial purposes. The trading posts included living spaces for the traders and others. The encircling fences reinforced the fortifications and separated the buildings from their environment. These forts make imposing presences in the land, especially in contrast to the Indian tipis nearby.
