DescriptionFlying Pansy Butterfly wings open.Label TextDoughty created the Orange Blossom Sprays as a table decoration. The creamy white of the blossoms gleams against the glossy green leaves with a green, not-ripe orange. The artist planned to include a butterfly. She wanted to use a “great ivory and black butterfly.” Having been told it was harmful to orange trees, she changed to a “Flying Pansy.” It is not certain which species she meant by that common name. But this butterfly gives a bright spot of the color orange that is otherwise missing from the sprays, whose name just seems to call for orange.
