Label TextThis print was one of the images made for John James Audubon’s book on mammals. The book’s title is The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. It was important to have the color correct on all prints. The lithographer had pattern plates with the colors as Audubon wanted. The colorists who hand painted colors on the lithographs used the pattern plate as an example. This print of the Red-bellied Squirrel might have served as a pattern plate. This squirrel has another common name of Mexican gray squirrel. Its scientific name is Sciurus aureogaster.
