DescriptionMale (Cock)Label TextDoughty made accurate representations of the Baltimore oriole’s colors, orange and black. These colors gave the bird its common name. In the eighteenth century, naturalist Mark Catesby wrote that the name of the bird came from “Lord Baltimore’s Coat of Arms.” Lord Baltimore founded the colony of Maryland, where this bird is prominent. His coat of arms, however, uses a gold, not orange. Perhaps this discrepancy relates to the late adoption in English of the word “orange” for the color. The gold in Lord Baltimore’s arms could seem similar enough to the red-yellow of the oriole.
