Label TextThe burnt sienna background gives a warm, earthy tone to Mopope’s representation of a mother and child. Mopope was one of the Kiowa Six. They were a group of students from the Kiowa, or Cáuigù, tribe. They studied at the University of Oklahoma. These Kiowa artists painted in a flat style that had its roots in traditional Great Plains art. Mopope came from a family of artists including two uncles who were known as ledger artists from their drawings on paper. Mopope used hard edges and precise notation of clothing. He devoted attention to the detailed patterns on the baby carrier.
