DescriptionHorizontal oil painting of a landscape of hills covered with trees and foliage. The foliage is had oranges and yellows in addition t the greens. Low white clouds dot the horizon in a blue sky.Label TextBierstadt made several important trips to California, beginning in 1863. Bierstadt painted this scene on paper, which indicates that it was a study. It is, however, a more complex landscape composition than his smaller sketches. It reveals the artist's approach to large, dramatic landscapes interpreting the grandeur of the West.
