Label TextCook came to Taos, New Mexico, to prepare book illustrations. There he met the artist Barbara Latham. They married and each continued their artistic careers. Cook excelled at printmaking, producing woodcuts and lithographs. His printmaking probably influenced his interest in making works in shades of black, greys, and white. He drew this portrait of Chief Gall (c. 1840 – 1894), inspired by photographs of the famous warrior who fought in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Cook powerfully used charcoal to depict the strong planes of the subject’s face.
