Label TextCatlin painted this work as part of a historical series on the French explorer René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (1643-1687), who explored the Mississippi River and regions of Texas. In this painting Catlin depicted La Salle as he began his 1682 exploration of the Mississippi River for France. La Salle appears in the second canoe, wearing a red cloak and waving a flag. Catlin left the flag unfinished; in another version he painted the French fleur de lis on the flag.
