Label TextThe Quadrupeds of North America was the title of John James Audubon’s book on mammals in the octavo format. It is the smaller sized book of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. (See the Caribou, or American Reindeer in this gallery for the larger size print.) This volume is open to the Arctic Fox. John Woodhouse Audubon, son of John James Audubon, drew this animal. His model was “a fine living dog in the Zoological Gardens at London.” J.J. Audubon and co-author John Bachman wrote, “This animal is well adapted to endure the severest cold.”
