Label TextCurtis admired the “ancient, many storied, cliff-perched pueblos” in which the Hopi lived. “Picturesque Walpi, perched on the point of a rocky island in a sea of sand, is an irregular, rambling community–house.” Curtis described it as “built without design.” He believed it was “added to in haphazard fashion as need arose.” Yet he found that “it constitutes a perfectly satisfying artistic whole.”
