In the background at the top of the work is an American flag with a flying bald eagle superimposed near the top right corner.Label TextIn this quilt, Lieutenant Charles Young (1864–1922) is portrayed as a fearless leader and trainer of his troops at Fort Duchesne. He stands forward, proudly saluting respect for his country and the flag.
Young’s dedicated mission was to train his men and establish harmony between the Indians and the whites on the Utah frontier. In the background of the quilt, symbolic of his legacy of leadership training, are soldiers exhibiting their ability to perform military tactics in different positions. Young, who posthumously attained the rank of brigadier general, is depicted standing on a map that he drew.
