Label TextWhen cowboys came indoors, the saloon was often a gathering place for them and diverse townsfolks. The barroom provided a setting for Wyeth’s illustration for a story by Stewart Edward White. A cowboy came to a mining town to seek a more prosperous life. He narrated the story. The cowboy told about an Irishman who insulted the Dutch (German) saloonkeeper. The bartender later used a cunning scheme involving horse-trading to gain revenge. The story was original published as “Arizona Nights, Cyclone Bill’s Yarn: The Mining Camp Story,” in McClure’s Magazine. Stewart Edward White then included it in his book, Arizona Nights.
