Label TextDunton painted this work as an illustration for Zane Grey’s novel The Wanderer of the Wasteland, as first serialized in McClure’s Magazine. He portrayed the novel’s main character carrying to safety a man who has collapsed from the effects of desert heat. With a simple composition the artist portrayed the steep path confronting the hero.
