Label TextThe longhorn was the favorite subject of Reaugh (pronounced Ray). He said, “I like the old long-horned steer, the steer that made Texas famous.” Born in Illinois, Reaugh came to Texas with his family in 1876. He developed an interest in art. In the early 1880s, the brothers Frank and Romey Houston were cattlemen in Texas. They invited Reaugh to accompany them and their cowboys on cattle round ups and trail drives. Thus, he gained first-hand experience. Reaugh described the longhorn as “graceful, agile and alert, and the most colorful animal in existence.”
