DescriptionFort Union on the banks of Missouri River, Assiniboin people outside the fort; American flag
Label TextOn July 4, 1833, artist Karl Bodmer was at Fort Union. (The setting is near the present-day North Dakota and Montana border). He and Prince Maximilian had arrived on June 24. The Prince wrote, “The American flag flies brightly in the waning sunlight,” The Fort was a trading post for the fur trade, not a military fort. The Europeans mentioned no celebrations on the Fourth. The next evening, the Fort trader arranged entertainment with firecrackers and rockets. Later, Bodmer produced this print of the Fort with Assiniboin people camped outside.
