Label TextShindler faced the challenge of depicting the broad, flat prairie lands of the West. He painted from a viewpoint looking down on the landscape. The luminous, life-giving river bisects diagonally the vast landscape. In the lower right of the painting, Shindler showed buffalo rolling on the ground. Buffalo roll for several reasons. The action may provide relief from insects. It could also help shed winter fur. The rolling creates depressions in the ground called “buffalo wallows.”
