Label TextPainted portraits preserve likenesses. They are also important visual documents of history. The portrait of William Hempstead gives a charming depiction of a nineteenth century child. Hempstead grew up to be a businessman and prominent citizen in the Midwest. John Mix Stanley began his career as a portrait painter, but expanded his interests. He served on expeditions to the West and developed a gallery of paintings of Indians.
