DescriptionHorizontal oil painting depicting a hilly landscape with rock formations, including a tall formation in the background with a balancing rock at the peak. In the foreground, small human figures set up white tents.Label TextEmory’s report was in journal form, giving observations day by day. The gathering of information was important because the United States government knew little about the unfamiliar lands of the North American Southwest. Stanley must have worked closely with Emory. His paintings have notations about which day they illustrate. This painting relates to Emory’s entry for October 18, 1846. Stanley finished his paintings in San Francisco in 1847.
