Label TextThe longhorn is a hybrid breed of cattle. It resulted from the random mixing of Spanish and English cattle, both brought to North America. By the Civil War, there were significant herds of longhorn in Texas. Longhorns were the dominant cattle that cowboys trailed to market in the post-War period. The hardy animals withstood the arduous trip. By the 1920s, other breeds were favored and the longhorn almost became extinct. Efforts to maintain herds at state parks helped save the breed. H.J. Lutcher Stark, the collector of this work of art, had a small herd of longhorn on land in Orange County.
