Label TextThis print resulted from Thomas L. McKenney’s efforts. He held important positions in Indian Affairs in the U.S. government. He started the Indian Gallery collection of portraits. He wanted to reproduce these images in a book. James Hall became his co-author. They wrote biographies to accompany the portraits. According to the authors, Meta-Koosega was a warrior. He was also a medicine worker. James Otto Lewis sketched Meta-Koosega at a treaty site.Charles Bird King painted a portrait based on the work by Lewis. King’s portrait was the basis for Bowen’s lithograph for the octavo edition of History of the Indian Tribes of North America.
