Label TextPreviously this painting was known by the title Venice Sunset. It shows Moran’s interest in the effects of light upon water that would take the artist to Venice in 1886, but the architecture in the scene is not that of the Italian city. A pencil sketch by Thomas Moran of Havana, Cuba dated January 30th 1883 resembles the composition of this painting. So this is likely a depiction of Havana, painted by Moran after he returned to his studio from his Mexican trip.
