Label Text:Ufer’s painting combines landscape with figure painting. He portrays the landscape under a searing light with its scruffy sagebrush, rough terrain, and distant blue mountains. The Indian with his packhorses seems unified with the land. Yet with his bright white shirt and red bandanna, he does not present the romanticized image of the Indian of the past.
