Label TextBorn in Montana, Ellis developed an interest in art after a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1919. The New Mexican landscape with its variety of forms and dramatic light inspired his art. He developed a style influenced by impressionism as seen in this painting with its active brushwork, thick application of paint, and emphasis on light. Ellis was a founding member of the artists’ group Los Cinco Pintores.
