DescriptionHorizontal oil painting depicting a street scene occuring on a tree-lined street bordered by adobe walls with human figures scattered throughout the scene. Several American Indians occupy the foreground, one draped with a white cloth, three along the opposite side of the street, and one figure standing in the street wearing a long striped overgarment and holding a long item with fringe.
Label TextSharp made a street the subject of this painting and reinforced the emphasis in his title for the painting. The gate at the left is open to the yard leading to Sharp’s home and studio. Nearby is the home/studio of artist E.I. Couse and family. The street also conveys the life of the community. In Sharp’s time, residents of the Taos Pueblo came into the village of Taos for supplies and for work. Apache visitors came for trade and special gatherings. Is the “street where you live” part of your concept of home?
