Label TextHelen Greene Blumenschein chose a simple square adobe house as the cover image for her 1943 calendar. She set it among sheltering green hills with lush, green vegetation nearby. This image of a home in a vibrant landscape belied the troubled times that surrounded the making of this work. This calendar was a “war edition,” printed during World War II. Inside it, Blumenschein noted that there were only four illustrations, rather than the usual twelve. This was to “save paint and paper.” She exhorted the calendar owner to support the war efforts, “Buy War Bonds for Victory.”
