Label TextIn this portrait, the young woman from San Ildefonso leans slightly forward. She stares directly at the viewer. Her portrait conveys a strong sense of self. Curtis photographed her several times for his project. She must have been a favorite subject for him. She also had to be willing to pose. Curtis commented on her name. “The flower concept is a favorite one in Tewa names, both masculine and feminine.” Volume Seventeen documented the Tewa and Zuni.
