Label TextIn the title of this work, Curtis did not identify this Cree woman by name. In his comments, he wrote that this portrait was “representative of Cree physiognomy.” Physiognomy refers to the facial features. In the text volume, Curtis published another image of this woman. There he identified her as Mawinehikis — “Tries-to-excel” Cree. Both portraits convey a sense of a vivid person. Volume Eighteen documents tribes in the Canadian province of Alberta. It features the Chipewyan. It also includes the Western Woods Cree and the Sarsi.
