Label TextThis photograph is from a portfolio, Cowboys of Color. Russell wrote, “I’m not black. I’m not a cowboy. . . . The intent of this portfolio is to make visible the modern black cowboy. It is today’s history and shows the continuation of this black rodeo and ranching tradition into our time.” Unlike many rodeo participants, Machelle Baccus did not grow up around horses. She began riding horses after a divorce. She said, “After sometime, I realized my horse Kinda Like-a Charger was not getting it done. In 1989 I purchased my first real barrel horse, Pistol. After my first win, I was hooked.”
