Label TextOn a journey up the Missouri River in 1843, John James Audubon first saw a swift fox, a species found only on the Great Plains of North America. The agent at Fort Clark had captured it in a trap and he gave it to Audubon, who later took it back to keep at his estate in New York. The artist portrayed the fox in a graceful pose.
ProvenanceArtist. unknown [1]. purchased November 25, 1958 through (Nada Kramar, Washington, D.C.) by H.J. Lutcher Stark [1887-1965]; bequeathed September 2, 1965 to the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation; accessioned to the Stark Museum of Art | 1. In a letter dated Oct. 8, 1958, from Nada Kramar, Washington, D. C., from whom this set was purchased, she states: "This set comes from a descendant of an old New York family whose head was a personal friend of John James Audubon." (see Stark file 13-30, p. 14)
