Label TextDarling was born in Norwood, Michigan. He graduated from Beloit College and worked as a reporter. He moved to the Des Moines Register as a political cartoonist. He had a special interest in conservation. Darling was an avid hunter and did etchings of wildlife as a pastime. President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him Chief of the Biological Survey. In that position, he made the first Duck Stamp. Darling quickly sketched a pair of Mallards. Later, he re-drew the composition and used the new drawing to make an etching. Thus, his print does not replicate the Stamp design, but commemorates it.
