Label TextBy 1967, O’Keeffe had settled in New Mexico, where she had a garden. This painting’s title points to a different source of inspiration. The painting’s subject is the heliconia, a tropical plant. O’Keeffe’s first painting of that subject came from a trip to Hawaii. In 1939, an advertising firm offered her an all-expense paid trip there. In exchange, O’Keeffe provided two paintings for a pineapple advertising campaign. Nearly thirty years later she painted this heliconia with its scarlet red bracts. The bracts are the leaf structure resembling a lobster claw. Orange gives definition and dimension to the bracts.
