Label TextThe British Government produced this medal with a likeness of King George III on one side and a royal coat of arms on the other. British authorities gave these medals, called “peace medals” to Indians, especially those who supported the British during the War of 1812 with the United States. The United States produced and distributed similar medals featuring the likenesses of American presidents. Portraits of Indian leaders often show them wearing these medals. This George III medal belonged to artist Paul Kane, who painted several Indians wearing peace medals.
