Kane, Wanderings, Chapter XII In the unpublished manuscript for Pictorial Sketches, Kane described this portrait: "A Klickatat Indian - the mode in which he had twisted up his hair being unusual I enquired the reason, and was told he had taken offence at something, and that this was the common way of showing anger among this tribe."
