Label TextKane described this scene in Pictorial Sketches: "The Songas village with the landing of the Indians after being out gathering Camass - this root grows in great abundance on Vancouver's Island and some of the small plains on the island are literally covered with a blue carpet of the flowers of this plant - between 2 + 3 thousand indians were collected together on this spot employed in the harvest - the bay is named after the plant being called the Esquimalt or the place for gathering Camass."
